Just checking in. My plan is to leave Grand Rapids mid to late Friday. Jim Pennell will probably be with me. Vaugh mentioned that Frank Banko may be up. That would be nice. I'll call Walgren and find out his plans. John Meyer E-mailed me that he would arrive on Thursday. The GR Press is recording excellent salmon fishing at the mouth of most rivers and predicts a great harvest due in part to a reduction in stocking kings. The survival rate increased alone with the quality. Go figure. Since everyone is declaring their choice of tackle I'm going with the Fly rod (too) for my second year. Sounds like a trend. See ya on the water.

Hello fisherman. We are a week and a half from hitting Bear Creek. I thought I would share a few discoveries from this past weekend visiting Kaleva.

12 of the Camp, Canoe & Brew tribe camped at Fletcher’s Creek on Hodenplye Pond just west of Mesick for a weekend of canoeing. We canoed the Manistee on Saturday morning to our campsite on Hodenpyle, made lunch and then headed to Bear Creek for a little fishing. I made everyone promise to never fish here again until after the second weekend of October. Anyway, we parked at the culverts and immediately ran into a fisherman who told us a story about the DNR coming in and dumping lamprycide into Bear Creek at 9 mile and another location. Apparently, they dumped too late in the season and dumped to much into the stream so it killed all the salmon that were in the river. Indeed, when we hiked down the river we saw very few swimmers but many dead fish. They had no white on them and they all had the same level of decay, indicating they died before they normally would and that they died at the same time.

We had breakfast on Sunday at Lenz’s Country Kitchen and Bonnie told me the same story. She even saw the truck parked for two days at the Nine Mile bridge over the Bear. After breakfast, the gang stopped at Tippy to watch the circus. There were many fish in at the dam. We saw a few jump the rubble pile into the pool below the dam and saw 1 or 2 reeled in. Afterwards, I visited my friends in Wellston who read a news article in the Manistee paper about the incident. Apparently its angered a bunch of fishermen who thought it was inappropriate timing. The article seemed to indicate that the Department was short staffed (which is very true) and they could not hit all the rivers in the time they wanted. This was an unfortunate consequence of understaffing the dept -- their take on the whole incident.

Anyway, … other news…. Doc’s old place is all fixed up with new siding and people staying at the camp. The water was low, slightly stained but looked as good as ever.

I’ll but updating the wts website with the latest on who’s coming to the Kaleva Hilton some time this week.

See you soon!
