Overview
This is Camp, Canoe & Brew's annual salmon fishing, autumn camping, leaf peeping, end of summer outing. We always follow the Whistling Trout Society weekend which was moved to the second week of October for 2004. This puts High Banks at the end of the salmon season. We often do well this late in the year. This late in the season there are fewer fishermen in the stream, cooler temperatures, and unpredicatable weather - from warm 70* days to snow at night and rain all day between. Being prepared is your best bet for a comfortable and fun weekend.

Camping
Our camping spot depends on who attends and how muddy the two-track to High Banks is during this weekend. If bad weather is predicted, we'll camp in town at the Kaleva park where there is a large shelter and picnic tables. If the weather looks rain-free, we'll camp at High Banks along the river. I'll post directions and maps later.
Fishing
This is small river salmon fishing as the fish migrate to spawn. Generally this is site fishing for large fish while they do their thing over gravel redds. We use light gear and walk many miles of river in search of our pray. Read the 2004 Michigan Trout & Salmon Guide (6MB PDF). The following is an equipment reminder for those new this year.
- 6' 5" Medium action rod with 10 pound line
- Largest net you can find with a 12" or less handle
- All species fishing license
- Waders with belt
- Rain jacket
- Rope Stringer
If you need any gear, from fishing to camping, let us know. We have a large supply of loaner gear.
Timeline
The majority of CCBers will arrive Friday after work - before 10pm. Those coming from far away places like Cincy will arrive any time the next morning - usually before 3am. Ideally, we'll eat a fast breakfast in camp around 6am, and hit the river by 7am. We'll fish the morning until 11ish, then come out for a lunch at the Dam Site Inn - enjoy a few hours of football and beer while the salmon hide from full afternoon sunshine. At 3pm, we'll head back into the river and fish until dusk. We'll take our fish to be cleaned in Brethern and then head back to camp to clean up for a dinner and dancing at the Kaleva Tavern. Back at camp, we'll build a short bon fire because most people will be exhausted from a full day of CCB merriment.
