Weather |
This trip experienced the worst weather of any trip before. It never stopped raining, sleeting, hailing, snowing. Some form of moisture fell from the sky the entire trip. Ice clung to branches, paddles, and our jackets. |

Winter Canoe Info -
Gear - I am bringing three canoes. I figure Nick can paddle Toad's Old Town Guide by himself. I have paddles for five, but only one life jacket. This is shallow water, but I imagine Ohio regs require one floatation device per person.
Matt, Please pack two paddles and enough cushions or life vests for the Cincy crew.
Very Important. I am not sure of the population density along the river - We need to be prepared in case a canoe rolls and there isn't much help near by. Very Important. I want everyone boat to have a dry bag with a COMPLETE change of dry clothes... I mean, socks, long underwear, shoes, shirts, jackets, hats, gloves, etc. I am bringing a large bag of fat wood just in case we need to start a fire. But the most important thing is to have dry clothes for people to change into incase they roll. I have two large dry bags - Matt has at least one, Tom has one or more. We should be in good shape.
The current weather forecast is pretty grim. There is a 50% chance of precip which is being described by weather.com as a Wintery Mix. The high is predicted to be 30*. We will be in the water at noon. Right now that means that you will have to leave by 8am. Tom and I are working over the timing to make sure that is correct - but it is our current best estimate. We will be on the water at the warmest part of the day.
This is a 11 mile float - similar to other Ohio canoe trips we have been on. We will be on the water for a few short hours. The worse the weather, the faster we paddle. I think its going to be great. We just need to be prepared to help avert any uncomfortable situations.
If you have neoprene waders, I would consider wearing them. They will keep you very warm, and dry in case you roll. Men, have waterproof boots to help push your canoe over the thin water... Make sure you have some kind of waterproof gloves... because your hands will get wet. Water always drips down the paddle shaft and soaks the hands. You don't want that mixed with 30* temps.
Make sure you have rope - We will be tying our gear bags into the canoe so nothing gets away from us in case of a spill. We will be sticking close together during the entire trip so we can help each other out. I don't think we will have any problems at all - but in these colder conditions, its important we are ready in case bad things happen. Oh, and don't forget the PBR. This is a BYOB weekend, as usual.
Matt, et al, what am I forgetting?
Now for the shooting info -
I have ear protection, ammo, and guns for myself and the cincy folk. You are responsible for your own eye protection. You must bring glasses - or you will have to rent them at the range. We will be shooting a double round of sporting clay, which means 100 rounds - that’s four boxes of shells. Please bring a small bag / book bag / fanny pack to carry your shells and eventually your empty hulls. The range will charge you $10 bucks per round - that's $20 bucks. You'll need to pay me $16 for the four boxes of shells.
That’s about all the detail I can handle in one night and one email. Let me know if you have any questions.
Scott.
