   Cost

A $15 deposit per paddler is due ASAP so we can reserve the boats. Camping costs $3/person/night.

The cost for canoeing depends on how many boats float. A boat that takes the 7 hour trip will cost approx $36 - $40, and the 3 hour trip costs $27 - $30.

Camping

Paris Park is approx. 3 hours from Auburn Hills and Southfield.

When you enter the park, drive directly to the small office with the Stop sign. Tell them you are camping at Group Camping Site #1 with the GMAC Camping Club. They will collect $3/person/night.

Facilities

Our group camping area is a large wooded area with picnic tables. When you arrive, we will show you where to set up your camp. Most of the tables will be moved together near the fire ring for our meals. This leaves the majority of the space for tents and a small strip for horseshoes.

Nearby is a building with bathrooms AND showers. A playground is around the corner for the kids. We are a short walk from the riverbank if you'd like to fish. At the north end of the park is a trout pond where you can catch trout for .30 cents per inch. They will provide the fishing rod, the bait, and clean and wrap your catch. I plan on catching one or two to fry up with some potatoes on Sunday morning. Let me know if you are interested in joining in for this very traditional Michigan camping & canoeing breakfast.

The first 8 vehicles will get a parking pass to park at the camping area. All others can drive in to unload, but will need to park in the parking area approx. 100 yards from the campsite.

Bathrooms -- have shower/toilet stalls. Are equipped with electricity and mirrors. Sorry ladies, no couch like the one we have in our bathroom here...

Trout pond -- separate part of the park. Has it's own gate. Gates open 7:30am, but man who runs pond arrives around 9 or 10am. Cost= $0.40/inch.

Canoeing

There are two options for canoeing: 7 hour or 3 hour trip. Currently, our group is evenly divided between the two. You may choose whichever duration you prefer.

The plan is for the 7 hour paddlers to begin in the morning. Those paddlers will paddle downstream approx 4 hours to Paris Park. At Paris Park, they will pick up the rest of the paddlers who want to canoe for 3 hours, and together they will finish the trip in Big Rapids at the canoe livery. The canoe livery will shuttle everyone back to Paris Park at the end of the trip.

Beginner Canoe Workshop
We are considering offering a beginner canoe workshop for those people who are interested in learning more about paddling a canoe before leaping aboard for the 3 hour trip. The workshop will last approx 2.5 hours and will cover all the basic information about canoe safety, getting in and out, basic paddle strokes, communication between paddlers, reading rivers, what to do when your canoe flips, and more. If this is something that interests you, let Mark Shinaberry or Scott Borchelt know. This group will be taken up stream for a 1.5 hour trip on Saturday morning. We'll spend 30 minutes in onshore instruction, then board the boats and push off downstream. The river is calm and perfect for learning the basics. We will finish at Paris Park with plenty of time to grab lunch before our entire armada heads downstream for the 3 hour trip to Big Rapids.

For group meals, Scott is providing paper products, utensils, cooking equipment. We need volunteers to bring the following side dishes for dinner on Saturday:
pasta salad
baked beans
fruit salad
veggie tray
relish tray
potato salad (Suzanne will bring)

We are anticipating 23 people, including children, so please plan your side dish accordingly. If you are willing to bring a dish, please reply to givemeacanoe@burntcabin.org and advise which item you are bringing.

Thank you and look forward to seeing you all there!

T-Shirts

Be sure to order the official Give Me A Canoe T-shirt. You know you don't want to be the only person without one.

Directions

Believe it or not, if you live northeast of the city (Rochester area) you'd take a different route than if you lived southwest of the city (Southfield area).

From the North, Take I-75 North to M-10 West - M-10 is approx 80 miles from Great Lakes Crossing in Auburn Hills. Take M-10 West approx 80 miles to Reed City. If you hit M-131, then you have gone too far. Turn left at the four-way stop (Northland Drive) and travel for 6 miles, through Reed City to 22090 Northland Drive - Paris Park. Paris Park will be on your left.

From the West, take I-96 West for 133 miles through Lansing and Grand Rapids to M-131 north. Take M-131 North for 53 miles and exit 142 (19 mile road). Turn right off the exit and go 1.2 miles to Northland Drive.  Turn left onto Northland Drive and go north 3.1 miles to 22090 Northland Drive - Paris Park. Paris Park will be on your right.
