Weather: (as of Tuesday Night)
Fri - Sep 21 - Mostly Cloudy 64°F 45 °F
Sat - Sep 22 - Partly Cloudy 64°F 45°F
Sun - Sep 23 - Scattered Showers 63°F 44°F

Weather looks perfect for canoeing on the P.M. on Saturday. But be smart and bring your rain gear in case. I'll have the Armadillo with me for shelter from the rain, etc. The rain will only help the fishing - as long as it's not like the rain on the August trip.

REMEMBER: THE FIRST DAY OF FISHING IS FLY FISHING ONLY!!!!!!!

The Plan
So far, here are the paddler's for the September paddle on the P.M.:
Mike Eberle, Darrin & Beckie Braska, Little John U, and myself.

I am hoping the Braska's can get up there early and secure a campsite for us. I will be coming up with Eberle and Little John and won't be able to leave until after 6 PM on Friday. We will enjoy Friday together around a campfire and awake early (relatively) on Saturday. Actually, we could really take our time since we can't get on the water early enough to see the best salmon action. So we can't get up and catch breakfast in town at a diner.

Then, we'll head to Baldwin Canoe Rental and hop on the river around 11. The first days float is only 3 hours to the campsite. So, we have lots of time to fish along the way if you want, or make it a real slow float or get back to camp in a short time. Doesn't matter a bit. We just have to be off the water by 6. If anyone wants to do any more fishing, the water around the campsite looks great.

Our campsite is right down by the water's edge. I saw it when I scouted the river a few weekends ago. I don't know if we will be able to squat a site down at the riverside but that's first choice. The earlier we can get there on Friday, the better the chance. This late in the season, generaly only fisherman will be camping there.

I thought we would make an easy dinner that night at the campsite... Brawts, chicken breasts, corn on the cob, and Beckie's Foil potatoes which are the BOMB! So here are the assignments:
John - Corn, Mike - Brawts, Beckie/Darrin - Foil Potatoes and I'll bring the chicken breats & marinade---> a special marinade all the way from a small town in Upper New York I have been saving for this trip.

On Saturday, anyone who wants to get in a second day of fishing/canoeing, can. I suggest the three hour float down through Rainbow Rapids. If not, then you can hang out in camp or fish the redds near Gleason's. We can talk about these plans on Friday around the fire.

River Information with Maps

September 5, 2001:
Right now, the plan is to meet Friday night at a campground called Gleason's Landing. This is right on the river... The campsites butt up against the river. Awesome. Then, we will carpool up to M-37 and put-in at the road crossing there. It's a 3 hour paddle to Gleason's Landing... Which is a short trip. The reason for such a short first day trip is to have to time to fish the salmon which should be in full force during the 22nd. We will be able to canoe to the prime fishing spots, hop out and fish for a while, then canoe to the next. We will then end on Saturday at the campground where our camp will alraeady be setup for a big dinner and campfire.... Excellent! Then, we'll finish our canoe trip with 3 hours on Sunday before heading back to Gleason's and on to home.

What do you think? Please reply to this message, send to canoe at burntcabin dot org if you want everyone to see your message, or post a msg to the messageboard. I just returned from the Pere Marquette on Monday night after canoeing 60 miles over the weekend on a scouting trip for this weekend. This is one of the most beautiful rivers in Michigan. It is recognized as a Federal Scenic Waterway...

August 2001:
This will be an overnight trip on the P.M. I hope to find a riverside camping spot in the National Forest for our stop Saturday night. We will bring backpack food to try for dinner. And I am hoping to use this trip as a chance to scout the water for Salmon fishing this fall. This river is one of the finest steelhead and salmon rivers in the L.P.

More details to follow after we return from the Kentucky Big Bone Lick.
