Bear Lake 2003 Newsletter

July 10, 2003 - Attention Bear Lakers

Our trip is three weeks away. Soon we will be enjoying beautiful sunsets, good fishing, but most of all our friendships. This trip has the most rookies in years and I look forward to sharing this adventure with them.

We will depart from Flint / Grand Blanc on Friday, August 1st, around 9:00 AM. Everyone South of Saginaw should be at Dorthy's place by 8:00 AM to help with the packing.

Directions to Dorthy's place from the South:
Take I-75 North to I-475 just south of Flint. Take exit 23 - Hill Road - and proceed East (right). After crossing Center Road, watch for Steeple Chase Drive on the right. Turn right and drive to the very end of the court to 6101 Steeple Chase. Grandma Dot's phone number is (810) 603-xxxx.

Garland and I will bring food for the dinners and Mike will bring food for the two group breakfasts. Eveyone is responsible for their own breakfasts and lunches. Remember, some of the lakes do not allow cans and bottles, so plan accordingly. We will provide milk for the group, Bob Taylor will buy soft drinks and I will buy 15 cases of beer. We will stop north of the border to buy extra beer and liquor to avoid the duty free border stop. If you have a cooler and have the means to freeze a couple gallons of water it would help to keep the drinks cold.

Things to remember:
" Fishing Rods <for Jim Perrine>
" Sleeping Bag or sheets for the bed
" Rain Gear
" Hiking Boots
" Insect Repellant
" Day Pack

Booth rookies and veterans should get in the website to ask and answer questions. I am looking forward to seeing everyone.

Wishing you Tight Lines
Dave & Scott Borchelt

Hello Fishermen.

Here are a few more details for our trip.

In Flint, we will collect $140 for the kitty. This pays for most of the incidentals on the way to and from our fishing adventure. It pays for the gas, ice, bridge tolls, Friday night dinner at the Antlers's, the hotel in Blind River, and breakfast on the way in. It also covers the crawlers and prizes for the largest fish and most of the expenses on the way home.

On the way north, we'll stop at the Pierson Road Meijer to fuel up the vehicles. Please plan on arriving fully equiped so we can avoid the Meijer shopping for the basics. We have wasted 90 minutes during the past few years waiting for last minute shoppers. Lets try to avoid this extra stop.

We'll stop in Gaylord, Michigan, to pick up Mike Goodrich, et al. At the Soo, we'll have dinner at the Antler's and fuel up for the last time with cheap American gas. Hopefully the border crossing goes well. My father is bringing 14 cases of beer from Illinois, one for each adult. After crossing the border, we'll stop and pick up whatever extras you desire - liquour and beers (in Echo Bay or Bruce Mines). I am still working on the keg strategy from Espanola. I think we'll score thanks to our MIA Euchre Grand Marhall from Denver. In Thessalon, we'll stop for ice cream and fishing licenses. You are responsible for purchasing your own ice cream and fishing licenses. The 7 day non-resident fishing license costs $38 CAN. The best plan is to pay with credit card - to get the better exchange.

A Harley Festival is planned for Espanola this year so all the hotel rooms are booked for our first night in Ontario. This year, we will stay at the the Old Mill Motel in Blind River. For those who remember the last time we stayed in Blind River, we closed the bar in town, then crashed a wedding party bonfire at the same hotel and got invited to the wedding on Saturday. I think "the kids" finally made it to the hotel around 4am.

Old Mill Motel, Blind River, ON P0R 1B0, Phone: 705-356-2274.

The hotel is about 90 miles from the Soo. We have five rooms reserved with three fishermen per room.

We'll have to be up early for the 70 mile drive to Lang Lake Landing. We'll have breakfast in Espanola and then make our way to Lang Lake for our pickup. Hopefully we'll be fishing by 2 PM on Saturday afternoon. Please make sure eveyone helps carry the kitchen and group food to the cook cabin, cabin 8. The group food should be taken care of before anyone takes their pesonal gear to their cabins.

The last real responsibility is to pay the remaining blance on the trip. Please bring the balance to be paid by mid-week. The camp accepts cash only for the balance of the bill. Do not bring checks or plastic to pay the balance.
